LightNex Broadband Internet Frequently Asked Questions

How is LightNex's fiber optic Internet service different from Cable Modem?

In a cable modem network, all of the cable modem users in a neighborhood (or even a whole section of town) share one network segment that is limited in speed, often at 10 Mbps. Each modem on the network watches the line for traffic directed to it, and forwards it on to your computer. Depending on the number of customers on each network segment, cable modem customers may see their speeds drop dramatically at peak times, when they are sharing the limited bandwidth with a large number of other customers. For more details on how cable modems work, see this web site.

In LightNex's fiber optic system, each user is allocated a guaranteed amount of bandwidth between your home and our network center. In this way, what your neighbors do doesn't affect your speed. And, your data doesn't get sent all around the neighborhood or town.

How is LightNex's fiber optic Internet service different from DSL?

LightNex's fiber optic Internet service is similar to DSL in that it is a direct connection between your house and our network center, with a guaranteed amount of bandwidth. Our service is delivered over fiber optic cable instead of copper, which allows us to scale the bandwidth to many hundred times what can be delivered via DSL. In addition, our packages are generally faster than DSL for a similar price.

What are the minimum computer requirements to receive LightNex Internet service?

LightNex currently requires the following minimum computer specifications to support Internet service:

PC/Windows:

Macintosh:

If your computer does not meet these minimum requirements, it may still work with the LightNex Internet service. However, in this case LightNex will not be able to support your system or effectively troubleshoot problems you may have.

My computer or Internet seems slow. What could be wrong?

Most often, this is a result of your computer being infected with a virus, spyware, or adware. Once your computer is infected, it can be difficult to remove the infections. To remove viruses, we recommend AVG Antivirus. In fact, most LightNex Internet accounts come with a free license for AVG Antivirus. Contact us for details. Trend Micro also has a web-based virus scanner that is easy to use and free.

Removing spyware and adware is more difficult and risky. Two of the most popular programs for combating the problem are LavaSoft Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy.

To help avoid spyware and adware infections, we suggest you use the Firefox web browser instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer. To download Firefox, click the Get Firefox button: Get Firefox!

What does the setup charge cover?

The setup fee charged on some packages covers any work necessary to install a FiberPoint on the outside of your home or office (if necessary), the termination in your smart panel of one jack per computer allowed in your package, a patch cable (up to 10 ft.) for each computer allowed in your package, and the initial configuration of your computer to utilize the services (if your computer meets the minimum requirements above).

This charge does not cover any inside wiring that may be required, such as if there is no available data jack near where you would like the computer, or converting a phone jack to a data jack. On new construction, this should be completed by your builder or electrician. LightNex is happy to provide inside wiring services for an additional charge.

What if my home or office doesn't have a smart panel?

In this case we will provide the necessary wiring to one location in your house. If your package allows for multiple computers, we will install a hub or switch at this location to which additional computers may be connected. If requested, LightNex will cable additional connections for an additional charge. Please note that if your house is not pre-wired we may run wires on the outside of your home/building or on your walls, such as in corners, along the roof line, or along the floor boards.

Can I move my computer?

Yes, you may move your computer whenever you wish. Depending on your setup, this may require minor changes in your smart panel. LightNex will make these changes for you upon request for an additional charge of $35 per jack. If your smart panel is equipped with a hub, or you have added one to your package, any port which is hooked up to the hub can be used without additional work. Additional jacks can be terminated and tested at the time of initial install for $20 per jack.

Can I use wireless to connect to the Internet?

Yes, you can, but you are responsible for the installation and maintenance. LightNex does not support wireless connections due to the variety of equipment and standards. In general, if you wish to set up a wireless network we recommend you consistently use one brand of equipment, as configuration often varies by manufacturer. Per the Acceptible Usage Agreement, if you operate a wireless access point, it must be secured, and must be utilized only by your household or office. If it is determined you are using wireless (or any other means) to share your Internet connection outside your household or office, your account will be suspended.

Can I check my mail when away from home?

Yes, simply visit http://webmail.lightnex.net

Why does my speed seem to vary at different sites or times of the day?

Many factors affect Internet speeds. In much the same way that a chain is only as strong as the weakest link, the speed you will see for any particular type of Internet traffic is only going to be as fast as the slowest link between your computer and the remote server. For some sites, your traffic may pass through as many as 20 different networks before reaching its destination.

Most popular sites such as Google, Yahoo, CNN, ESPN, etc. should always be relatively fast because these sites have a huge amount of bandwidth at their disposal. Even at these large sites you may experience slow downloads at times. For example, nfl.com will probably always be a bit slow during the superbowl. If you see a web site advertised on the news or a TV show, it will probably be slow for a while after, as everyone tries to visit the site at the same time. Some smaller sites don't have much bandwidth at all, and are therefore much more prone to slowdowns. For example, if a local business is featured on the local news, it is quite likely that the site will be slow.

In addition, LightNex prioritizes traffic to ensure a quality Internet experience for all customers. We place a higher priority on traditional, interactive Internet traffic such as web browsing, e-mail, FTP, ssh, telnet, remote desktop, etc. Continuous, high-bandwidth, non-interactive traffic such as BitTorrent, p2p, and file sharing are placed in a lower priority queue. If you feel your traffic is being incorrectly categorized, please contact us.

To verify your internet speeds, we may suggest you try speedtest.dslreports.com for an independent verification of your speed. Please note that you may get dramatically different results using different test servers. We suggest you try the test on more than one test server, as well as trying it at different times of day. Also, the load at the test server at the time of test will impact test performance. For best results, you may wish to test at off-peak hours.
